Description of US CAPIL Maps

US % CAPI LEP Map (Description)

This US map illustrates all 50 states:

Each state is color shaded to indicate the percent of limited English proficient (LEP) persons who speak an Asian Pacific Islander (API) language in the state. We have defined LEP persons as individuals five years and over who speak a language other than English at home and who have indicated that they speak English less than very well (LVW).

Percentages:

The colors correspond to percentage of CAPI LEP individuals in the state as follows:

  • Light Yellow: (<=5%)
  • Pale Orange: (>5% AND <=10%)
  • Orange: (>10% AND <=20%)
  • Dark Orange: (>20% AND <=30%)
  • Brown: (>30% AND <=50%)
  • Dark Brown: (>50%)

US CAPI Raw Count Map (Description)

This map illustrates the CAPI LEP states in the United States with pie charts of the top five CAPI LEP states:

  • State of California (CA) –Dark Brown Shading
  • State of Illinois (IL) -Brown Shading
  • State of New Jersey (NJ) -Brown Shading
  • State of New York (NY) –Dark Brown Shading
  • State of Texas (TX) –Dark Brown Shading

The states are color shaded to indicate the total number of limited English proficient (LEP) persons who speak an Asian Pacific Islander (API) language in the state. We have defined LEP persons as individuals five years and older who speak a language other than English at home and who have indicated that they speak English less than very well (LVW). For each state, we have also provided a pie chart that breaks down the top five API languages spoken in the state (according to the total number of each API language spoken) with the remaining languages in a sixth category called “Other CAPIL”.

Raw Counts:

The colors correspond to the total number of CAPI LEP individuals in the state as follows:

  • Light Yellow: (<=10K)
  • Pale Orange: (>10K AND <=50K)
  • Orange: (>50K AND <=100K)
  • Dark Orange: (>100K AND <=200K)
  • Brown: (>200K AND <=300K)
  • Dark Brown: (>300K)

The states are shaded to indicate the number of CAPI limited English proficient (LEP) persons in the state. We have defined LEP persons as individuals five years or older who speak a language other than English at home and who have indicated that they speak English less than very well (LVW). The tables explain the raw count number and percentage of CAPI LEP persons by language spoken for the top five states.
