Description of US State LEP Maps

US % LEP Map (Description)

Note: This US map contains both states and the territory of Puerto Rico, each acting as an independent statistical area.

This US map is color shaded to indicate the percent of limited English proficient (LEP) persons in each statistical area in the United States. We have defined LEP persons as individuals five years or older who speak a language other than English at home and who have indicated that they speak English less than very well (LVW).

Percentages:

The color shadings correspond to the percentage of LEP individuals in the statistical area as follows:

  • Light Yellow: (<=1%)
  • Pale Orange: (>1% AND <=4%)
  • Light Orange: (>4% AND <=7%)
  • Orange: (>7% AND <=10%)
  • Dark Orange: (>10% AND <=14%)
  • Brown: (>14% AND <=20%)
  • Dark Brown: (>20%)

The table below contains the information about % ranges for each state. Go to the data here.

Pie Charts:

We have defined LEP persons as individuals five years and over who speak a language other than English at home and who have indicated that they speak English less than very well (LVW). For the top 15 highest % LEP statistical areas, we have also provided a pie chart that breaks down the top five languages spoken in the statistical area (as a percentage of the total number of LEP individuals in the area) with the remaining languages in a sixth category called “All Other Languages”. The top 15 statistical areas and the information in the pie chart s are listed below in the tables. Additionally, these tables explain the raw count number and percentage of LEP persons by language spoken.

US Raw Count LEP Map (Description)

Note: This US map contains both states and the territory of Puerto Rico, each acting as an independent statistical area.

This US map is color shaded to indicate the total number of limited English proficient (LEP) persons in each statistical area in the United States. We have defined LEP persons as individuals five years or older who speak a language other than English at home and who have indicated that they speak English less than very well (LVW).

Raw Counts:

The color shadings correspond to the total number of LEP individuals in the statistical area as follows:

  • White: (<=100K)
  • Light Yellow: (>100K AND <=200K)
  • Yellow: (>200K AND <=300K)
  • Pale Orange: (>300K AND <=400K)
  • Orange: (>400K AND <=500K)
  • Dark Orange: (>500K AND <=1M)
  • Brown: (>1M AND <=2M)
  • Reddish Brown: (>2M AND <=3M)

Dark Brown: (>3M AND <=8M)

The table below contains the information about raw count ranges for each state. Go to the data here.

Pie Charts:

We have defined LEP persons as individuals five years and older who speak a language other than English at home and who have indicated that they speak English less than very well (LVW).
